LOVE-SHYNESS IN CINEMA
Although there are many movies about lonely guys and guys unlucky and troubled with finding romance, only a handful of movies directly relate to love-shyness.
My Date with Drew (2004) This low budget movie documents the true story of a guy named Brian as he tries everything to get a date with actress Drew Barrymore. In my mind Brian is love-shy. He cannot get normal dates and becomes fixated on an actress. Barrymore seems to be an actress love-shy guys adore. He employs the typical love-shy tactic of working around standard romantic procedures. But, since his attempt was done publicly as part of a socially accepted project—and with great determination and conviction—it worked. Not only was the movie relatively successful, he obtained a girlfriend (not Drew) while making the movie.
Private Practices: The Story of a Sex Surrogate (1985) Thankfully, this documentary is now on DVD. One of the profiled clients is obviously love-shy, and he is good looking and fit. Is employing a sex surrogate the right thing for you to do? Watch this film before deciding. An intimate look at a generally highly misunderstood profession.
Lars and the Real Girl (2007) When a guy purchases a realistic female doll to substitute for an actual girlfriend, the guy has given up with actual women. It's hard to say if many love-shys do this since love-shys place a high regard of romance with sex.
Private Parts (1997) Radio personality Howard Stern may talk about raunchy sex on the radio to millions, but he may be, or may have been, love-shy. Watching him when he televised his radio show, one could see him get nervous when an attractive female guest in a bikini came close to him and touched him. Watch his biographical movie to see how a lanky possibily love-shy guy achieves success.
40 Year Old Virgin (2005) The title may apply to love-shys, but the movie avoids referencing love-shyness and instead does a Hollywood sanitized comedy. Realistically, men who are purely hapless are not 40 year old virgins.
Ordinary People (1980) This academy award winning drama starring Donald Sutherland and Mary Tyler More and directed by Robert Redford shows how a screwed up mother makes it seem like everything is all right and it's just the son who has all the problems. Despite no love-shy characters, this movie hit real close to home with me, since my family treated me like I was the weird one for dealing with and trying to overcome my love-shyness and Asperger's syndrome.
